Sheila and Peter Whittaker knew as soon as they set eyes on the place 27 years ago – “it was love at first sight” – and have since established Hundalee as one of the most highly rated B&B’s in the Scottish Borders.
This is Scottish Borders accommodation at its best and here’s what some of Hundalee’s satisfied guests say…
‘Had a great stay at Hundalee’
‘Home from home atmosphere’
‘A beautiful house – accommodation excellent’
But Hundalee is quite capable of speaking for itself. Walk around the building and you will find a large and appealing 17-century manor house set in acres of secluded woodland and gardens that makes it own statement.
It is conveniently located, a short drive off the main A68 road, a mile south of Jedburgh and only 15 minutes from the Carter Bar border with England. So whether you are looking for an overnight stay, a short break or to tour the region Hundalee is the perfect base.
Hundalee is steeped in local history, its early days tracing back to the powerful Kerr and Rutherford families – both well know Borders names. Sheila is particularly proud of the 1667 marriage stone that sits above her cooking range.
The Kerr clan were famously left-handed and this is reflected in Hundalee House with staircase built to assist lefties. The same feature is also found at the nearby Kerr stronghold of Ferniehurst Castle.
While Sheila has concentrated on the B&B business, husband Peter has developed his interest in farming and in particular keeping rare breeds of sheep and they are part of the landscape around Hundalee along with a striking pair of peacocks.
The house offers four beautifully appointed en suite bedrooms and one room with private facilities in the east wing. The Hundalee breakfast uses home grown produce wherever possible.
“Many of our guests have been recommended to Hundalee and there’s also a lot of repeat business. We try to create a home from home for guests and firmly believe that Hundalee is a treasure worth sharing with others,” said Sheila.
