Old Gala House welcomes Mapplethorpe

MapplethorpeThe Old Gala House in Galashiels is staging an exhibition which will showcase the work of famous photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.

It opens on 11 May until 11 August and is expected to attract people from all over the Scottish Borders and further afield.

Mapplethorpe is one of the most provocative photographers of the 20th century. Renowned for his magnificent, large scale black and white photographs, he has inspired artistic debate and intrigued.

A selection of photographs including some of the most well known iconic self-portraits and portraits of many of the most influential artists, writers and musicians will be on show in Old Gala House.

Assistant Curator, Phoebe Stewart said: “We have been working with National Galleries Scotland and the Tate Galleries in London to get a final list of Mapplethorpe works together. It has not been an easy decision as his works are pretty powerful images and can easily overwhelm each other. However we have a finalised list of works and think this is going to be a really strong and exciting show.”

The works are from ARTIST ROOMS, an inspirational collection of modern and contemporary art donated by Anthony d’Offay to Tate and National Galleries of Scotland for the nation.
