Border Towns
The Scottish Borders and Northumberland region is a great place to explore.
Dotted through rolling hills and beautiful countryside, and along spectacular coastlines, are historic towns and communities that are standard-bearers of a proud heritage.
They are also enthusiastic cheerleaders for hospitality – whatever time of year, there’s a warm welcome waiting in the brilliant borderlands.
It is a region teeming with age-old traditions, history round just about every corner and home to great names from that colourful past, from sport, science and the arts.
From Corbridge in the south borderlands, the major staging post for an expansion northwards of the Roman Empire, to Hawick and Alnwick, both with strong connections to the Harry Potter story, and on to Seahouses, Bamburgh, Berwick and Eyemouth, all located on one of the finest coastlines anywhere in the UK.
A date no one can forget in the Scottish Borders is 1513 when the English and Scots armies met at the Battle of Flodden just outside Coldstream, later to become the home of the Coldstream Guards.
The encounter claimed the lives of over 10,000 Scots, including King James V, and it is still commemorated through the Borders famous Common Ridings. They take place each year in many Border towns and involve hundreds saddling up to carrying out a ritual marking of town boundaries.
Famous sons and daughters of the Scottish Borders include Sir Walter Scott whose magnificent home at Abbotsford, a temple to the Scottish tradition, lies midway between Melrose and Selkirk.

Mary Somerville of Jedburgh excelled in scientific research and, by breaking particularly thick 18-century glass ceilings, was the first woman to present a paper to the Royal Society. Somerville College, Oxford is named in her memory and she made it on the Scottish £10 note in 2017.
Sporting heroes include Jimmy Guthrie and Steve Hislop who became superstars on Europe’s motorcycling circuits and Jim Clark who was a revered Formula One world champion. All have commemorative exhibitions in their home town museums at Hawick and Duns.
Many have already booked a place in the pages of exploretheborders.com and others will, no doubt, be knocking on the door in the future.
In the meantime we guarantee a visit to our towns of the borderlands will not disappoint. A glimpse of what’s on offer is just a click away at the towns listed.
