The Borders – celebrating all things equestrian.
The Scottish Borders has long had the reputation as Scotland’s horse country, a region where celebrating all things equestrian comes as natural as catching a bus, and it’s a passion that extends south of the border into Northumberland.
Over 300 miles of off-road horse riding trails criss-cross the borderlands, a legacy shaped by a combination of the Border Reivers and a rural lifestyle lost in the mists of time.
Today, these well trodden trails and the equestrian sector are centre stage for a major tourism initiative, Ride Scotland’s Horse Country (RSHC).
Building on the region’s trump cards of its outstanding countryside and rich history, RSHC is developing a quality network of facilities for riders and their horses.
Catering for short and long-stay visitor options and, once fully operational, is expected to make an important high profile contribution to the tourism sector in the Scottish Borders; efforts that will ripple out to benefit north Northumberland and Dumfrieshire.
And to make life easier for visitors to the region there’s a well established B&B service for horses and ponies in the Scottish Borders. The five-star Horses Welcome initiative was successfully established under the guiding hand of the British Horse Society (Borders) and now offers 10 quality assured stops.
Explore the Borders will be keeping abreast of all the news from the equestrian sector.
